Had Princess Diana been alive today, she would have been celebrating her 58th birthday with her beloved sons, grandchildren and extended family.
Sadly, some 22 years ago, she lost her life in Paris in a car accident, purportedly on the run from the paparazzi who regularly hounded her. Her death sent shockwaves around the world and the normally stoic Queen, knowing the adoration and love she commanded, finally allowed the flag to be flown at half-mast during her funeral ceremony.
Those images of the young princesses walking behind their mother’s coffin will forever be embedded in my mind. Two young boys in solidarity for love of their mother and conforming adherence to Prince Charles dictate which scarred them forever.
Shy Diana Spencer had the world enthralled when she married austere, taciturn Prince Charles. Over the years, she emerged polished yet with an underlying need for acceptance and love, none of which was received from the inhabitants of the palace.
Who would forget her style and elegance on almost every occasion? Or that famous dance with heartthrob John Travolta at the White House’s state dinner.
Princess Diana will undoubtedly even in her absence, remain one of the most favoured royals, known for her beauty, humanitarian deeds, compassion, shining heart and most importantly, devotion as a mother to her young boys.
“A breath of fresh air”, she conquered hearts and as Elton John later sang, she became a “candle in the wind”, forever emblazoned in the world’s hearts.
Goodbye England’s Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we’ll always carry
For our nation’s golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will.

I, too, found her captivating. Sadly, her fairy tale life as a princess did not have a happy ending.

Very sad.
I remember her passing so well. I was at home on maternity leave. Mom broke the news to me.
I cried and stayed glued to the TV all day.

I will never forget turning on the TV and seeing the ‘breaking news’s and announcing her death. I cried my heart out, but at the same time, I could not accept it was happening.

I too cried Liz.
We loved her from my school days when she was a kindergarten teacher.
What a tragedy.

such a great loss! Lady D was loved by people, she was the people’s princess and forgive me but she was killed, the accident wasn’t an accident, they couldn’t accept that she loves a Muslim man that’s it…
Elton John’s tribute to her was really a great song that was originally sang to Marilyn Monroe with some amendments of course
Great tribute on her birthday ❤

I also believe that it was a conspiracy. Yes, Elton hastily revisited the song for her, a hit nonetheless.
Such a beautiful woman, her life taken so quickly. I never forget these dates. 🤗🌺🌸💐

Hi Mahima, a treasure she was. I despaired for her boys. She loved them so and we would have made a fantastic Grand Mum.

Very nice words in honor of a beautiful person. We tend to be connected yet must adhere to reality. I feel your connection and hold in me the same. As with all in this World, one must carry on. Is that special?
