Entranced by the tranquillity of a garden restaurant, tea time treats turned into lunch time meals at 23 on Carbis in Scottsville.
A misty road trip to meet my intrepid travelling friend Heather resulted in pleasurable hours spent indulging in a catch up over lemonade and rooibos tea.
The meal arrived later than we expected, but that was immediately forgiven as we had strolled in later than our reservation time, our time had been consumed by a warm reception with Heather’s parents. My son, typical young adult immediately opted for the burger and fries. Heather and Hubby chose the thai fishcakes (a combination of hake and prawns) and myself, hake and chips. Fat slices of deep fried potatoes were ideal for the dull weather although the salad that come with the daughter’s spaghetti bolognese looked tantalising, the variety of ingredients topped with cubes of feta.
Having been previously, Heather advised on the presence of a vocal peacock which was obviously lounging in the nether regions of the garden, protected by the furry family who kept over inquisitive visitors like us at bay.
The food when it arrived by the friendly waitress, was well presented and of decent proportions. Thanks to Heather sharing, the fishcake was fresh and meaty. Always a sign of excellent meals when plates are empty. My hake fillet here was preferred as compared to other eateries.
Delights like painting from locals artists, crocheted seat covers and crocheted tea cosies over the little teapot that stored my rooibos was warmly received. A keen crocheter myself, I was told that the Carrie had created them, so the personal, homey touches were really appreciated.
The garden hut was a pleasurable find, with local treats of rusks, homemade jams and little mementoes. The corner fridge was immediately opened by my son to investigate the contents (sandwiches and salads) which would need to be paid for in the main building. Refreshing that conscience and trust is valued. The blackberry and peach jam for breakfast this morning took me back to the serenity and peace of yesterday’s road trip.
Owners, Rob and Carrie attention to detail and service excellence is obviously paying off with international and local patrons. The best advertisement, I would agree are the referrals and judging from the accessibility, location, service and setting, “23 on Carbis” will always be a popular choice.

Really nice plug for Tea On 23. These little hide-aways are always so nice as the food is generally excellent, and the price is always fair. Great post. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. With not missing the mention of all the other seasonal celebrations.

My friend, this was great in every way. Regret not being able to see the peacock. Look after yourself avd careful of all the rich foods (ive been telling myself this too). Mind your health and take care of yourself in the days ahead. May 2019 be kinder in terms of health being our wealth. I send warm regards from Sunshiny South Africa. 💐🌸🌺
